The founding of the Plains District Memorial Museum began in 1998 with Timberville Mayor "Mac" McCauley's dream to preserve local heritage and bring the communities of the Plains District together.

The first displays were donated artifacts from individuals and businesses and included an 1880's band wagon, antique fire truck, and old Farmers and Merchants Bank calendars. These collections have expanded over the years, and the museum now occupies an historic Main Street building in Old Town Timberville.
