The Book Shelf: 20th Century Local Historians

Much of the history of our area has been preserved by little- known local historians, most
of whom were life-long residents; the current exhibit focuses on ten of these historians.
Some have written one book on a specific area; others have more extensive works.

If you are interested in reading about the origin or history of one of our communities, we
invite you to come by the Museum and do your own search. The exhibit which also
includes tools used by early writers is based primarily on a new collection of local
history recently donated to our library.

The exhibit will be on display until June 2024.

First Responders Exhibit

A new exhibit at the Plains District Memorial Museum will include the history of each of our local First Responder Organizations along with artifacts and pictures illustrating their history.  A special new collection from the Timberville Fire Department includes gear and equipment from its early years which showcase the advancements made in fire fighting since the 1940’s.

Another special feature of the exhibit will be the collection of Forest Ranger Allen Biller of Timberville who served in Alaska for 10 years as a member of the National Smokejumpers Association. His collection includes photographs, tools, fire gear and uniforms used by aerial firefighters in controlling forest fires.
